Privacy and confidentiality

Helpers see a made-up name, not yours. But each type of helper follows different rules about what they must report. You read these rules in the app before your first message to that type of helper.

The rules for each helper

Talking with a chaplain

Counseling with a chaplain is privileged communication. Chaplains will not share what you say with anyone, including your command, law enforcement or medical staff, unless you give your informed written consent. Safety Locate is not available in chaplain conversations.

Messages stay on both phones for up to 14 days after the last message, then they are deleted.

Talking with an MFLC

What you share stays private and is not reported to your command, with some exceptions required by law and military rules. Your counselor must act if you are at risk of harming yourself or someone else, or if you share suspected domestic violence, child abuse or neglect, sexual assault, or illegal activity. If you want to talk about a sexual assault and keep the option of a restricted report, talk to your SARC or the DoD Safe Helpline first.

Messages stay on both phones for up to 30 days after the last message, then they are deleted.

Talking with a licensed counselor

What you share stays private. Like all licensed counselors, yours must act if you are at risk of harming yourself or someone else, and must follow the reporting rules of their license.

Messages stay on both phones for up to 30 days after the last message, then they are deleted.

Talking with a peer supporter

Peer supporters are trained service members and veterans. They are not counselors. If they think you might be at risk, they will offer to connect you with a counselor right away.

Messages stay on both phones for up to 7 days after the last message, then they are deleted.

Safety Locate

If a counselor believes you or someone else is in immediate danger, Safety Locate lets them see your phone's location so they can send help. It only works in conversations with an MFLC or a licensed counselor, never with a chaplain or peer. It is never used for anything else. Every use is recorded and reviewed, and you will see a message on your screen when it is turned on. You can turn this off at any time in Settings.

Safety Locate is off unless you turn it on. Your location is encrypted on your phone and only your counselor's phone can read it. Our server never sees where you are.

Asking for your location

Any helper can ask you to share your location. Nothing is shared unless you tap to share. You choose to send it once or to share it live for 30 minutes.

What our server can and cannot see

What it keeps

  • Your made-up name and your base
  • The type of helper you asked for and how urgent it was
  • The privacy rules you agreed to, and when
  • Your name and details, locked in a box we cannot open
  • The day you last used the app
  • Counts we use to run the service, like how many requests each base had

What it cannot see

  • Your messages, voice notes and calls
  • Your check-in answers
  • Your location
  • Your real name, unless you share it with a helper in the app
  • Your .mil email address, which we use once and do not save
